pressed and a non-genetically engineered oil. It is refined, bleached and deodorized
and represents the oil of the future.
The oil’s viscosity is similar to soybean but thicker than corn or
sunflower.It is naturally winterized
oil that remains clear under refrigeration.
The most important characteristic about this oil is the level of
saturated fats (lowest among commercially important vegetable oils).
Notes on Biodiesel Emissions
Engine Requirements
Biodiesel requires no engine modifications, just put it in
the tank and drive. Incorporating biodiesel into a central fuel location for
light and medium duty fleets may be easier than you think.
Biodiesel In Use
Today biodiesel is being used in trash haulers in San
Jose, school buses in Arizona, and has been used in Europe for over twenty
years.
Currently biodiesel is 10 to 15 cents more per gallon than
diesel fuel. Changes in emission regulations and uncertainties in OPEC could
change this very quickly.
Emission Numbers
Biodiesel has a sulfur content of ZERO, making it an easy
environmental friend. It also is 11% oxygenated by weight, so it burns
cleaner.
Pure biodiesel cuts particulate matter by 30%, carbon
monoxide by 50% and hydrocarbon emissions by 93%.
As a blend called B20 (20% biodiesel, 80% diesel), it cuts
emissions by 22%, 20% and 30% respectively. Only oxides of nitrogen (NOx)
show an increase with pure (13%) and blended biodiesel (2%).
Table salt is more toxic than biodiesel. Its flashpoint is
300 deg. F. much higher than diesels 125 deg. F.
It also acts as an internal lubricant for the engine.
